Gap Year Job News

The TUC has said that is has not ruled out supporting a commission to settle the argument over the rights of people in temporary work.

Brendan Barber, the general secretary of the TUC was speaking at a CIPD meeting called to discuss the Private Member's Bill which calls for people in temp work to have the same tights as people in permanent positions.

Mr Barber said: "We don't want to see any undue delay in making progress on the issue. We don't want a process undermining other European standards. We are in no way supporting a UK opt out which could somehow be legitimised by a commission process."

He also said that legislation is the only way to stop people in temporary jobs being exploited by agency and employers.

John Wright, who is chairman of the Federation of Small Businesses, said the legislation is "heavy handed" and said it would badly affect small businesses and put pressure on bosses of them.

Small businesses often use temporary workers to save on cost and because they provide flexible working but there are fears that these people may be being treated poorly.

The TUC has 66 affiliated unions and represents nearly seven million people and campaigns on behalf of those people on economic and social issues.
