temporary work complaints fall
18-Mar-2008

Temporary work complaints fall The amount of complaints made by temporary workers to the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) last year fell by 20 per cent, providing good news for students who are considering doing temp work during the holidays.

According to the REC the amount of overall complaints did increase in 2007 but the number of disciplinary matters which it investigated fell.

Helen Reynolds, the REC's acting chief executive, said: "The continued increase in the number of complaints and queries is an indication of the increasing greater awareness of the REC's standards role among employers and jobseekers. But the overall figure still remains extremely low in relation to our membership numbers."

In 2007, people in temp jobs accounted for 30 per cent of all queries made to the REC, compared to 50 per cent in 2006.

The majority of the complaints received by the REC were about holiday pay, communication, customer service, pay and terms of engagement. It also revealed that the number of serious cases it investigated in 20007 was 24, down from 94 in 2006.

Of the 24 serious investigations, one resignation was received and five inspections took place.

The REC is a trade body which supports and represents the recruitment industry, which is responsible for placing more than 1.2 million people into temporary jobs every year.
