Workers told to take breaks

18 Mar 2008

Workers told to take breaks Students working in part time jobs during term time should take plenty of breaks to ensure they do not suffer from repetitive strain injury, according to Physio at Work.

The consultancy service has warned employees that they are risking injuries if they do not take breaks and get up and move about during their working hours.

Bronwyn Clifford, a chartered occupational therapist and director of Physio at Work , said: "They should change their tasks so they are not just typing all day - alternate between writing, reading, going to do some photocopying or filing and going to meetings, so that they are not just sitting in front of a computer screen eight hours a day."

She added that employers should be the ones that are encouraging their staff to take the breaks and move around frequently in order to ensure their staff are as healthy as possible.

Repetitive strain injury covers a range of conditions and can be caused by any activity which requires "prolonged maintenance" according to Physio at Work.

The company also said that awkward postures and repetition or exertion of force can cause injuries at the work place.

According to RSI Awareness, musculoskeletal disorders of the upper and lower limbs are a major problem in the workplace and cost industries up to £20 billion annually.
