o2 announces napster deal
14-Mar-2008

O2 announces Napster deal O2 has announced it has agreed a deal with Napster to offer music downloads on its mobile phones, providing good news for students who listen to music on their mobiles.

People signing up to the deal will be able to download tracks onto their mobile phones for 99p a song.

The charge is 20p more expensive than the regular charges for Napster Light although music is then not downloaded to a mobile. However the offer of a track for 99p is also more expensive than the iTunes offer that iPhone users can enjoy which offers music for 79p a track.

BMG chairman Ged Doherty said: "Napster pioneered subscription services in the online world. We are delighted to support them as they move into the mobile space with O2 - another brand making a considerable impact on the music landscape."

O2 has had a deal with Napster in Ireland and Germany for the past few years but has only recently signed this deal for the UK.

The Napster feature will be available in over 30 of O2's handsets and will also offer deals such as five for £4. Five million songs will be on offer through the service.

In related news, Apple has announced that more than 10,000 developers have downloaded its programme to create applications for the iPhone and iPod.
