Apple says that more than 100,000 developers have downloaded the kit needed to work on new applications for the iPhone and iPod in just four days.
The firm made the Software Development Kit available for users to generate new applications in the hope that it would kick-start a host of new accessories for the iconic mobile phone.
And the tech community has responded in style, with Philip Schiller, Apples senior vice president of worldwide product marketing, hailing an "incredible" reaction.
"Also, over one million people have watched the launch video on Apple.com, further demonstrating the incredible interest developers have in creating applications for the iPhone," he added.
Some of the big movers and shakers in the mobile world have already rushed to get new applications out, with Namco unveiling new versions of arcade classics like Pac-Man for the handsets, but the variety of new tools should expand in the coming months as all manner of creative types come up with new ideas.
Apple's iPhone caused near hysteria on both sides of the Atlantic when released, with the gadget becoming a must-have piece of equipment for many students.
