employees using weather as excuse
11-Mar-2008

Employees using weather as excuse Employers have been warned that eight per cent of employees in the UK use the weather as an excuse not to turn up for work, according to new research.

A report by YouGov, which was commissioned by Croner, has also revealed that men are more likely than women to use treacherous weather conditions as an excuse not to turn up to work.

Jo Pitts, employment expert at Croner, said: "Although ultimately there needs to be flexibility from employers when extreme weather sets in, staff also need to be aware of the consequences of using bad weather as a reason not to turn up for work."

She added that employees should look through their contracts and find out what their employers policy is for when bad weather hits and failing to do so could "result in serious disciplinary action".

According to the research, people in Scotland are seven per cent more likely to call in and blame weather conditions for not attending work than people in London. People over 55 are more likely to make it into work than the younger generations, the research also suggests.

Croner provides information and services to companies including human resources, trade and transport and environmental management.

It also offers advice on complying with employment law.
