Gap Year Job News

The number of temporary jobs being created in the UK has risen at the fastest rate in three months, according to new research which may be good news for students looking for temporary work during their gap years.

Research from the accounting group KPMG and the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) has shown that although the number of permanent positions on offer fell, there was a rise in jobs for people looking for temp work.

Alan Nolan, director of KPMG, has said that because of the credit crunch and its implications, permanent positions have fallen and employers are dealing with the "uncertainty in the economy" by opting for a "more flexible labour force".

Helen Reynolds, acting chief executive officer of the REC, added: "The increase in demand for temporary workers once again highlights the crucial support that agency staff provide for UK employers and the opportunities that this form of flexible work provides for the workers themselves."

The report also showed that the inflation of wages and salaries continued to ease, with permanent staff salaries increasing at the weakest rate for 23 months.

Established in 2000, the REC is the trade body which represents the recruitment industry and is made up of over 8,000 recruitment agencies and businesses. It also has 6,000 recruitment professionals as members.
