Part Time Job And Holiday Job News

employees to get more protection
28-Feb-2008

Employees to get more protection Businesses which are found to be exploiting their staff will face unlimited fines under new legislation which is to become law this year, providing good news for students in part time jobs.

The employment bill 2007-2008 will give protection to workers and will punish companies which are found guilty of acts such as not paying their staff at least the minimum wage.

Steven Meyerhoff, employment lawyer at Backhouse Jones Solicitors, told onrec.com: "Businesses which follow the rules and act within the law have nothing to fear – but those that don't could face unlimited fines."

He added that the new bill will provide protection to vulnerable workers by giving investigators more power and also "toughening up penalties for those businesses breaking the law".

Mr Meyerhoff concluded that the legislation is also likely to repeal the regulations which are currently placed on businesses who are contemplating disciplinary action against their employees.

Among the changes which will be brought in with the new legislation is altering dispute resolution at work and tribunals which the government is hoping will benefit employers, trade unions and the public sector.

The employment bill is expected to receive Royal Assent by the summer.

Further good news for people in part-time work may come if the recent temporary work bill is passed. It is set to have a third reading in parliament.
