Thousands of construction workers needed

Students who are considering taking on part time work in the construction industry during their holidays could be in luck as the Construction Skills Network has announced that due to projects to ensure the infrastructure is in place for the Olympics, the industry will require 88,400 new recruits every year throughout the UK.

It is estimated that the construction industry will need 122,000 bricklayers, 189,000 plumbers and 211,000 electricians by 2012 and the industrial body has said that the recruits are needed to make sure infrastructures such as roads and trains are completed to meet deadlines dictated by the Olympics.

Sir Michael Latham, the chairman of Construction Skills Network, said: "We've identified the scale of skills needs by project and region over the coming years."

He added that it is now essential that the network works with employers and training providers in order to put in place the "practical, on-site training that will help local people get the skills they need to fill local job vacancies".

The network has said that it is confident that a lack of workers will not be an obstacle to the projects for the 2012 Olympics being completed on schedule.

Plans are already underway to set up a network of training centres around the UK to create more skilled construction workers.

The Construction Skills Network represents every part of the construction industry.
