Asda announces job boost

22 Feb 2008

Asda announces job boost Students who are looking for part time jobs around the country will be boosted by the news that Asda is set to open between ten and 12 new stores, creating 9,000 jobs in the process.

The supermarket chain will be creating 7,000 of those jobs in the next 12 months and many of those are expected to be part time jobs for students.

Judith McKenna, chief financial officer of Asda, said: "This major investment demonstrates our on-going commitment to bringing low prices and fantastic service to even more people across the UK."

She added that the company has an "impressive record" of regenerating areas at the edge of and in town centres in the UK, showing its "ongoing commitment to local communities".

As well as the new stores, there will also be extensions to the current shops around the UK, creating even more part time jobs.

The new programme of stores will start with the opening of the Andover site in Hampshire in March this year. It is also expanding its pharmacy business by opening in-store pharmacies in 50 of its stores. This will create 500 new jobs.

Stores in Kent, Dalgety Bay and Bridgend are all being expanded as part of the plans.

Asda was first established in the 1920s and was bought by American firm Wal-Mart in 1999.
