Students who are studying in Wales may see an improvement in their broadband in the future as the Welsh deputy first minister has announced that it is to invest in improving the services on offer.
Ieuan Wyn Jones said that the assembly government is now working with the broadband industry to ensure the whole of Wales can get a high-speed connection.
During the debate in the Assembly, Nerys Evans, the Mid and West Wales AM, said: "There are a number of examples of whole villages ... where research has shown that the lack of a broadband connection is having a great economic impact on the village."
He added that the exact figure regarding the number of people who can access broadband in Wales is not known but he believes it is "significantly higher than the 0.6 per cent which is reported in some places".
It is thought that the European Commission must give its approvals to plans to increase spending on the problem.
Meanwhile, it has been suggested that weather balloons could be used to improve broadband and mobile phone reception in rural areas in the UK.
Space Data claims to have enjoyed success with the idea.
