Employers back temporary work rights

20 Feb 2008

Employers back temporary work rights More than one in five employers in the UK believe that people in temporary jobs should be given the same rights as full-time workers from the first day they are at a job, according to new research.

The report, from the Chartered Institute of Personnel Development (CIPD), has also revealed that almost half of employers think that the European Temporary Agency Workers Directive would make the process of hiring people into temporary jobs more bureaucratic.

Mike Emmott, employee relations adviser at the CIPD, said: "If agency workers are to be given the same rights as permanent employees it is crucial that we get the detail right. Our latest survey findings suggest that a qualifying period of at least six months is necessary to command the support of employers."

He added that the proposed independent commission will need to "work hard" to consider the risks which are associated with this policy if it is to "allay employers concerns".

On Friday there will be a second reading of a private members bill which could give more rights to people in temp jobs.

The research comes as the union Unite reveals that one of its employees has gone undercover as an agency worker and found poor conditions for temporary workers. The employee claimed that he had illegal reductions taken from his pay, among other things.
