Many Britons would prefer to receive training on their extra week day this leap year, it has emerged.

Research from the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) found that around a third of UK workers would wish to improve their skills through training on February 29th, but 42 per cent believe their employer is unlikely to provide such an opportunity and 49 per cent are put off by the expense of it.

Training can broaden a worker's skills and typically leads to an average salary growth from £2,000 to £3,000 each year, the LSC said.

Workers are urged to ask for training from their employers by LSC Train to Gain director Glen Robinson.

"Improving your skills will help you take control of your future and will have as much impact on your career as it will on your general well being," he said.

The LSC's Train to Gain initiative is seeking to encourage employers who do not traditionally train to offer such opportunities.
