employers 'upbeat' about jobs growth

Employers 'upbeat' about jobs growth Opportunities for students to undertake part-time, temporary work placements or full-time jobs are set to continue in 2008, it has been suggested.

Monthly tracking research results for the last quarter of 2007 published by the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) have revealed that employers are upbeat for the year ahead.

More agencies were also found to be optimistic about the demand for temporary workers in the next 12 months compared to 2006, the REC noted.

Feedback from the group's research suggests that the impact of the credit crunch and uncertainty in the wider economy has not yet hit most recruiters, said Roger Tweedy, director of research for the REC.

"During this period of uncertainty and heightened economic speculation, it is important to focus on what is really happening on the ground. This research provides an invaluable reference point for recruiters and confirms that 2007 was another good year for the sector," he added.

REC recently emphasised how temporary work and the opportunities it provides for people to develop and broaden their skills-base can help women returning to the job market after a period of unemployment after the publication of its Jobs for the Girls report earlier this week.

In addition to helping older women get back into the workplace, REC head of public policy Annie Fairweather added: "Taking on temporary assignments is a great way for anyone, irrespective of gender, to familiarise themselves with the world of work."
