Students have a higher chance of being employed if they have gained work experience through internships and temporary work placements, an expert has suggested.
Having such experience in a relevant career area demonstrates to a future employer that the job applicant has awareness of how a business in the industry operates, commented Elspeth Farrar, communications director for the Association of Graduate Recruiters (AGCAS).
"It makes the application for full-time work that much easier because you've got a better understanding of what you're applying for, who you're applying to, and the kinds of skills that are going to be required," Ms Farrar stated.
Applications for internships can be as competitive as recruitment for an actual graduate job, but gaining a place on such a scheme often leads to full time work and is seen by some employers as a summer-long interview process, Ms Farrar noted.
"Within some sectors possibly as much as 70 per cent of their graduate intake is filled from offers to interns," she commented.
Students should tailor their job hunting process to include internships as a possible stepping stone for a future career in their chosen sector, Ms Farrar indicated.
An average of 29.2 applications were received per vacancy by employers who took part in an AGCAS survey last year.
