Virgin is set to offer broadband customers speeds of up to 50Mb with the launch of new high-speed services, it has been claimed.
The Daily Telegraph reports that the broadband provider aims to raise its speed from 20Mb following tests carried out last year in Kent.
According to the company, some nine million households in the UK will be able to take advantage of the faster service, the news provider said.
Michael Phillips, product director at BroadbandcChoices.co.uk said that it was "great" that Virgin was aiming to develop a network that customers would be able to benefit from without "having to shell out more money for the privilege".
However, the expert said that there needs to be "greater transparency" within the market to show the broadband speeds consumers typically get from their providers.
Last year, Rob Barnes, head of broadband and mobiles at moneysupermarket.com, said that a study by the firm revealed that fewer than half of subscribers receive the speed they originally signed up for.
The expert recommended that those looking to download large files opt for speeds in excess of 16Mb. Find out more about Virgin Media broadband here Compare internet service providers or use the broadband comparison chart to find the fastest broadband deal
