recruiters told: check health and safety
11-Feb-2008

Recruiters told: check health and safety Employers have been urged to make sure that they are complying with health and safety laws by the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH).

New laws are set to come into force in April which will increase the pressure on recruiters to ensure that they keep health and safety on the top of their agendas.

Richard Jones, policy and technical director for the IOSH, said: "Employers need to ensure they're complying with health and safety law and guidance from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and that their organisations have good health and safety systems and practices and positive cultures and attitudes."

He added that all areas where there is a significant risk should be "effectively managed" and listed workplace transport, occupational road risk and working from height as examples where recruiters should be looking to check.

The IOSH also said that companies should have access to someone with health and safety expertise, preferably an employee.

Companies which rely on UK recruitment will need to make sure they comply or face being prosecuted under the Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act, according to the IOSH.

IOSH is the leading body for health and safety professionals in Europe and has more than 31,000 members across the globe.
