TUC supports Agency Workers Directive

08 Feb 2008

TUC supports Agency Workers Directive The Agency Workers Directive, which would give students who work in temporary jobs more rights, has been described as a "huge step forward" in the employment world", by the TUC.

Responding to comments from the Professional Contractors Group, which said that the directive could be damaging to employees, the TUC has spoken in its favour.

Allison Balchin, policy officer with the TUC, said: Although it's fair to say as you go down the job ladder and you look at people on the minimum wage, you really are going to find the worst problems and the worst abuses. But it is by no means limited to that; certainly professional agency workers can be ripped off at work as well."

She added that the TUC is in direct contact with members of the public through its website and its view is "informed directly by the agency workers' experiences".

The TUC has said that the directive as well as the Private Members Bill, will give an entitlement to equal treatment to people in temporary work. It will help them get equal treatment in areas such as pay, working times, annual leave and sick pay.

In the UK it is estimated that there are 700,000 agency workers in temporary work at any given time.
