More undergraduate students with computer programming skills are wanted for IT / Technology internships at top investment banks this summer.

Sponsors for Educational Opportunity (SEO) London, who organise summer internships and placement year opportunities at investment banks in London for university students from ethnic minority backgrounds, have extended the deadline date for this year’s applications.

Jennifer Walper, associate Director of SEO London, explains: “Due to a recent increase in the number of IT Technology placements available in 2008, we have moved the deadline date back to February 15th. We are looking for penultimate year undergraduate students from any degree discipline who have computer programming knowledge. Final year students with plans to complete a masters next year are also eligible.”

SEO London is a not for profit organisation founded in 2000 that provides penultimate year undergraduate students from ethnic minority backgrounds, currently under-represented in investment banking, the opportunity to gain internships at some of the top financial services firms in the UK including: Barclays Capital, JP Morgan, Lehman Brothers, Merrill Lynch, Morgan Stanley and UBS.

10 week summer internships are available as well as 6 or 12 month sandwich year industrial placements. Successful candidates will need to be on track for a 2:1 degree in any discipline and posses excellent quantitative and analytical skills.

SEO London offer mentoring and training to assist their students and Jennifer Walper argues that this additional support can give their interns a real edge when it comes to graduate job applications: “Investment banking internships are incredibly competitive, with less than half of summer interns offered graduate jobs on completion of their internship, but this rises to 80% for interns who are placed through us.”
