300,000 to call in sick today
04-Feb-2008

300,000 to call in sick today Students who are doing temporary work and have part time jobs may be considering a day off today after it was revealed that today, the first Monday of February, sees more people calling in sick than any other day.

According to surveys more than 300,000 workers will be taking time off their temporary jobs and full time jobs today, which is labelled National Sickie Day.

Peter Mooney, spokesman for Employersafe, said: "It is a well-known fact in the business world that the first Monday of February is deemed the worst in terms of absenteeism.

"Psychologists claim National Sickie Day is the result of a combination of factors, including bad weather, long, dark nights and the seemingly never-ending wait until summer."

Today may also affect students who doing temp work and may be called in to cover full-time workers who have called in sick.

Mr Mooney went on to say that although employers must watch out for people taking today off they must also realise that a lot of workers could be genuinely ill with colds and flu at this time of the year.

Employersafe is a company which specialises in aspects of employment law as well as health and safety. It gives advice to employers about these aspects of work and has a team of employment lawyers who are experienced in dealing with employers and staff.
