Students have been encouraged to look around for the best credit car deals in order to improve their "financial fitness".
Abbey has said that if people looked around regularly for new deals on student credit cards then they could considerably improve their financial status.
Nici Audhlam-Gardiner, head of mortgages at Abbey, said: It's always a good idea to look at whether you can get a better deal, especially if you've got a balance on your credit card. There's certainly more that we can all do to improve our financial fitness.
"It's all about discipline, in the same way that you can be physically disciplined if you decide to get physically fit."
According to research carried by ICM on behalf of Abbey, 16 per cent of people carry a balance on a credit card at their lender's standard rate. It also revealed that women are more likely than men to be paying more on their credit cards.
Over 74 million credit cards have been issued in the UK and 55.3 per cent of all the credit cards in Europe belong to people in Britain, according to research from Debthelpuk.
