The government could be about to accept a proposed EU directive that will improve terms of employment for thousands of temporary workers.

MPs and backbenchers have opened discussions on the directive after years of the government sidestepping and blocking it.

Last year's discussions ended with the government insisting that temporary workers should not get the same treatment as their permanent counterparts until they had been in the job for at least six months.

The situation for students working through vacations will therefore not change unless this term is reduced or abolished.

Backbencher Jon Trickett, told the Guardian "vigorous discussions" were underway with senior government members.

"The way in which the EU's internal market is being implemented is threatening social and community cohesion, leaving tens of thousands of workers unprotected and driving down wages," he said.

Figures published by the Trades Union Congress (TUC) set the number of temporary workers at around seven per cent of total employees in the UK.

The TUC also says almost half of temporary workers are paid less to do the same job as their permanent colleagues, while 70 per cent do not have equal access to pension schemes and 25 per cent did not get paid sick leave.
