Female students who are looking for graduate IT jobs may be interested in a new report which reveals that women in IT feel they get more support from their colleagues and managers than the human resources (HR) department.

In a survey by womenintechnology.co.uk the results show that only 39 per cent of women in the industry rate the support given to them by HR departments as good to excellent.
This is in comparison with colleagues who are rates as excellent by 60 per cent of staff and direct bosses which are given the thumbs up by 57 per cent of women in IT.

Maggie Berry, director of womenintechnology.co.uk, said: "It's all very well for HR departments to have diversity policies in place but this has to be more than just ticking boxes.

"Almost two thirds of respondents to our survey claimed that the content of a prospective employer's diversity policy would be an 'important factor' in their decision whether to join."

The research also revealed that 28 per cent of women who responded to the survey rated the advice from HR departments as less than ok.

Ms Berry added that women should not have special treatment in the workplace.

Recently, NCGE Flying Start made the claim that female graduates who choose to become entrepreneurs rather than find jobs have more options open to them.
