23 Jan 2008

Small businesses offer graduates balance Smaller businesses could have a better chance of attracting graduates because they are considering work life balance to be increasingly important and it is small businesses which can offer them it, according to the Chartered Institute of Personnel Development (CIPD).

The CIPD has said that people looking for graduate jobs are considering more and more how it will affect their work life balance and small businesses are now picking up on this and looking at the issue.

Victoria Winkler, an advisor for the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), said: "Certainly, and I think that graduates are very aware of the different opportunities that are available. Smaller companies are as able as the larger companies to look at enticing people into the … job and the opportunities they will get."

She added that small businesses can look at things like flexible working and work life balance "which is increasingly important to the graduate".

According to the CIPD, smaller businesses look for graduates who have got good communication skills who can make an immediate contribution.
