New IT development programme launched

22 Jan 2008

New IT development programme launched A new development programme is being launched to help people looking for graduate jobs in IT to kick start their careers.

The scheme, introduced by E-skills UK, is being supported by universities and employers and will be a postgraduate course.

Starting September 2008, the course will offer a varying level of qualifications such as certificates and diplomas and cover business, communication skills, project management and technical skills.

Karen Price, chief executive of e-skills UK, said: "Many traditional entry-level IT roles are disappearing from the UK due to offshoring and technological advances. At the same time, increasing numbers of IT professional roles in the UK are becoming focused on highly skilled, customer-focused areas such as project management, business analysis and solutions design."

She added that this means it is hard for new IT professionals to learn skills and build experience and they "have to climb a career ladder with the bottom rungs missing".

Among the companies which are supporting the course are BT, Carphone Warehouse, Cisco and Vodafone.

E-skills UK is a not-for-profit organisation which attempts to ensure the UK has the skills needed to compete in the global economy.
