Engineering company goes for graduates

17 Jan 2008

Engineering company goes for graduates A shipbuilding and offshore construction company is using graduate engineers to help sole the skills crisis in the industry.

CD group, which specialises as an engineering services contractor has given good news for students looking to graduate as engineers in the next few years by saying that their graduate recruitment programme is crucial to the company and the industry.

Its graduate recruitment programme started 18 months ago and over a dozen young graduates have been given jobs with the company since then.

With a skills shortage causing problems for the sector, Peter Douglass, group managing director of CD group has said that it may have to look abroad for engineers if there are not enough graduates in the UK.

"Staff numbers have now risen to 150, but even these numbers will not suffice if we wish to fully service the opportunities open to us in the marine and offshore sector today. We are also looking further afield for resources and have identified pockets of extremely highly-qualified people in places such as Romania," said Mr Douglass.

He added that if we want to keep control of the work within the UK then "we need to bring these people here or face the possibility that this work will be lost to the region".

CDA and CD Group offer work experience to students from Newcastle University as well as recruiting graduates from the area's universities.
