Students with broadband will not have to worry about switching to the WiMax network in the future as it is unlikely to ever become the main broadband network in the UK, according to Point Topic.
WiMax, which is a wireless broadband transmission service, has too many faults according to Point Topic, although it has its advantages as well.
A spokesperson for Point topic said when asked if the system was the future of broadband in the UK: "As the network of choice for home and business internet access, or even having a substantial market share, not more than five per cent I would guess, absolutely not. One possible alternative for wide use as a second, low-cost, cheap and cheerful connection - perhaps for teenagers or for backup."
He added that he expects that along with WiFi, it will be play a role in "supporting access to the internet and other data services for travelling users it could and should be much cheaper than mobile networks".
Among the advantages of WiMax is that it does not need a fixed line connection and in principle it can provide connectivity over a wide area, according to Point Topic, which also said that its disadvantages were its performance relying on conditions such as the weather and its tendency to get overloaded when several users share a WiMax cell.
Point Topic provides focused information on broadband communications services and was founded in 1998.
