Students in Glasgow who need their mobile phones while being out and about, may be pleased to know that they will soon be able to use them on the subway.
A new cellular and Wi-Fi network, to be provided by Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT), will enable people at the subway stations to use their mobiles as well as surf the internet on their laptops.
SPT assistant chief executive Gordon Maclennan said: "Accessibility and connectivity are vital in today's fast moving technology environment and Glasgow is to set the standard of being the first city to provide both 2G and 3G phone and Wi-Fi coverage on the subway."
The technology will be deployed later this month and will be tested at the Buchanan Street subway station.
Connectivity trials are set to start this year for underground stations in London. Transport for London will be starting a project to give people mobile coverage on the Waterloo and City line.
A decision will then be made after the trials whether to extend the services to other underground lines and include Wi-Fi coverage.
SPT is the organisation in charge of the Glasgow subway and also plans and delivers transport solutions for the area.
