Minimum wage campaign launched

14 Jan 2008

Minimum wage campaign launched Students who are working in temporary and part time jobs while at university may be interested to hear that a new campaign has been launched to ensure everybody in the UK is receiving the minimum wage.

A minimum wage tour bus will be driving around the country, attempting to raise awareness of the national minimum wage which was raised to £5.52 last October for people aged 22 and over.

Minister for employment relations, Pat McFadden, says: "Every worker should earn a fair wage for a fair day's work. We want to make sure workers know their rights and employers know their responsibilities."

He added that the new campaign will "help provide those most at risk of underpayment with the advice and support they need to take action where necessary".

The tour starts in east London today and will be moving around the country, hoping to visit almost 800,000 people on the way.

Free help will be offered on the '£5.52: Are you on board?' bus to workers who feel they may be being exploited when it comes to their earnings. The bus is being funded by the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR).

BERR, which is the voice for business in government, was created last June and employs 2,500 staff.
