Students looking for car insurance are better off looking online, according to Norwich Union.
The insurer has claimed that using the internet to buy car insurance works out cheaper than using traditional methods.
Erik Nelsen, a spokesperson for Norwich Union, said: "There's a whole variety of things you can do to get your motor premiums down. One of the first things is to buy online if you can, most insurers are going to give you at least a ten per cent discount for purchasing your motor insurance online. The channel that you use to buy your insurance can give you a discount right there."
Mr Nelsen also suggested that people should keep their cars in a garage where possible to help reduce premiums.
If you have a partner or are married and they have a clean driving license then it is also cost effective to put them on your car insurance as this should give customers a discount.
Norwich Union last year announced the release of its new car insurance scheme 'Pay As Your Drive' which is designed to make insurance cheaper for people who do not use their cars very much.
