The iPhone is not as fully featured as other top-end mobile phones from other manufacturers but it does have other benefits, according to Ovum.
Although the iPhone boasts an iconic design, users and students who like to keep up to date with their mobile technology may find that other devices such as ones from Nokia have better features and can do more things than the iPhone, said the firm.
Jonathan Arber, spokesperson for Ovum, said: "It carries on the trend for iconic design. It's not as fully featured as the top-end devices from Nokia. It doesn't offer things like JPS and it is only 2.5G, but at the same time it does offer a greater ease of use with the touch screen so it'll be interesting to see how it does in the first year and see what the overall consumer response is."
He added that it depends what a consumer is looking for entirely and that it does have a lot of attractive features but on the other hand it is "very expensive".
The iPhone is available only from 02, Carphone Warehouse and Apple stores and costs £269. In the US, Apple announced in September that it had sold its millionth iPhone.
