Over 60 per cent of IT contractors are expecting their pay to rise by between five and ten per cent during 2008, giving good news for students who are planning careers in IT as contractors, according to a new report.

The research, which was conducted by the accountancy firm JSA, showed that contractors expect the rise despite 49 per cent of them also believing that the market for their services will not increase this year.

Barry Roback, chief executive of JSA, said: "Despite the government's ambivalent attitude to IT contractors and its inability to understand that for most contractors, freelancing is a positive lifestyle choice, there is plenty of evidence here that most IT contractors are self-confident positive people who enjoy the freedom and flexibility that contracting gives them."

He added that the survey shows that IT contractors are generally "positive, optimistic and enterprising."

There was not much love felt by IT contractors who took part in the survey, as 90 per cent of them said that they believed the UK has a negative attitude towards contract workers.

Of the contractors who were surveyed, only 20 per cent said they would like to return to full time PAYE employment.
