age discrimination rife
07-Jan-2008

Age discrimination rife Students looking for graduate jobs may want to be on the look out for age discrimination as it was revealed that it is the most common form of discrimination found in the UK, according to a new report.

The research, commissioned by Croner, shows although there have been new laws to prevent age discrimination, 11 per cent of employees surveyed believed they had been discriminated against due to their age.

Gillian Dowling, technical consultant at Croner, said: "Despite the massive efforts to ensure all employers were aware of how to comply with age discrimination legislation, this form of prejudice has quickly become one of the more prominent forms of workplace discrimination defined by employment law."

She added that employers should ensure that being too young or too old is "no longer a factor in any employment decision making".

According to the report, eight per cent of employees claimed they have been discriminated against because of their sex and just three per cent believe they had been treated harshly due to their rave or disability.

Of the workers who were surveyed, 73 per cent said they have not been the victim of discrimination due to any of the grounds such as age, sex, religion or race.

Croner is a provider of intelligence and support for companies in human resources, health and safety and education, among other things.
