Call centre to create 100 jobs in north-east Students in South Tyneside who are looking for temporary work may be pleased to hear that a new call centre in the region is creating 1,000 jobs in the area.

In the first phase of Garlands Call Centres recruitment drive, 100 jobs will be available at its contact centre in South Shields.

Chey Garland, chief executive of Garlands Call Centres, said: "It gives us enormous pleasure to announce the first phase of our recruitment activities in South Tyneside. We will be bringing opportunities for local people to work for blue chip organisations and develop their careers in the customer service industry."

She added that the company has "ambitious plans" for 2008 and is looking forward to continuing to build its operations in the north-east.

Jobs will be available in customer service, management and support staff and construction of the call centre in South Shields is expected to be completed in April. Eventually around a thousand people will work there.

Ms Garland revealed that the as the business expands beyond the number of people she wants to recruit in the next 18 months she may have to look outside of the north-east area for staff.

Garlands Call Centres was set up in 1997 after previously being a commercial debt recovery agency.
