job seekers told to check rights
02-Jan-2008

Job seekers told to check rights Students who are looking for new jobs in 2008 have been urged to make sure that they are aware of their rights regarding holiday, pay and flexible working rights according to the government.

New entitlements have been introduced in the past few months which allow workers more rights to work flexibly and new maternity leave arrangements and the government is urging job seekers to check the entitlements before accepting a job, reports Recruiter Magazine.

Employment relations minister Pat McFadden said: "We want to make sure that workers know what rights they have when applying for a new job, so they can check their existing conditions are up to scratch. In the past few months the minimum wage has risen and full-time workers have been given rights to an extra four days' paid leave a year."

He added that people deserve decent working standards which include "a minimum wage, the right to paid holidays and the right to work in a safe environment".

In April new rights are to be introduced for people looking for jobs as actors or models that will include a seven day period after they sign up for contracts when agencies will be banned from taking any fee.

Mr McFadden last month introduced a new system to give tougher penalties for employers who do not pay their staff minimum wage.
