Over a third of employees will have worked through the holiday period, according to a report.

The research, by the Post Office Travel Services, showed that 40 per cent of workers will have been working for some or all of the time between December 25th and January 1st.

Post Office head of travel services, Helen Warburton said: "We were surprised to discover that so many people will be at work during the festive period. Particularly when we have seen healthy sales of foreign currency over recent weeks which suggests more people are heading abroad."

She added that it is also "worrying to learn that so many people are not using up their holiday entitlement for the year".

A quarter of those working over Christmas are doing so because they feel they have too much work to take time off, according to the research. A further 58 per cent wanted a holiday but could not get time off work due to shift rotas or not putting in requests fast enough.

Employees of the government and public sectors are the least likely to have taken time of over this period – 75 per cent said they will be working.

One in ten businessmen said that they were expecting to work Christmas Day, according to a report by Clydesdale Bank.
