Recruitment in the education and teaching sector has been described as "buoyant" by the Schools Minister.

Jim Knight was responding to claims by the Conservative Party that the sector was in disarray because 250,000 qualified teachers were not teaching, reports the BBC.

"Ofsted has said this is the best generation of teachers ever. Early retirement and churn in teaching is in fact good compared with equivalent professions. No government has done more to support teachers," he said.

The minister was backed up by a spokesperson for the Training and Development Agency for Schools who said that many qualified teachers take a break from the profession "for a number of reasons".

He added that the figures that the Conservative Party referred to did not take into account "teachers returning to teaching at a later date".

According to the research that was highlighted by the Conservatives, nearly 100,000 teachers switched careers between 2000 and 2005 which was nearly double the amount that did in the five years before.

Earlier this month a report by the Royal Society showed that there was a shortage in maths and science teachers.
