An estimated one in ten businessmen and women are set to miss spending Christmas day with their families due to work commitments, according to a report.

The research, by Clydesdale Bank, shows that for 500,000 people Christmas Day will just be another day in the office, providing a warning for students looking to go into business.

Mike Williams, banking general manager at Clydesdale Bank, said: "If there was one day in the year that you'd expect most people to put work to one side, it would surely be Christmas Day, but these findings are testament to the fact that Brits just don't know when to say stop when it comes to work."

He added that while it is generally acknowledged that people in the UK work longer hours than people in Europe, it is "astounding that so many business people still appear to miss what is traditionally one of the most important family holidays of the year".

Businessmen and women in the east-midlands are the worst culprits for spending time at work over Christmas, almost a quarter of them have missed Christmas due to work. In Wales however the figure is just nine per cent.

More than one in five people surveyed admitted to missing one of their own children's birthday because of work in the last year.
