T-Mobile and 3 are attempting to bring wireless broadband to 98 per cent of the UK population by pooling their 3G mobile phone networks.
The two companies are also hoping to save £2 billion over the next ten years by removing the need for 5,000 phone masts.
T-Mobile UK chief executive, Jim Hyde said: "This is a major change in how mobile networks are built and run. In terms of consolidation (going forward) this has nothing to do with that, this has to do with combining our two networks together. It's the right thing for us to do ... to accelerate our mobile broadband proposition."
The deal will benefit students who want to get access to broadband on their mobiles by giving them better access to information wherever they are.
Speeds of up to 7.2 MB per second is the target the companies are aiming to reach by 2009. This is twice the average speed of a household's broadband in the UK.
3 has denied that it is interested in providing fixed line services, preferring to stick with broadband services for mobile phones.
Network provider O2 has recently launched its broadband service for households.
