O2 is planning to offer UK customers a TV service which will be delivered via broadband next year.
The company is to go up against BT, Sky and Virgin Media in the UK pay-TV market and will start trials on the service in the New Year.
More competition in the market could result in a lowering of prices which would mean great deals for students, in particular on bundled deals involving broadband, TV and phone lines.
O2 TV is already operating in the Czech Republic where it has 55 channels including on demand content from Sony Pictures, Disney, HBO, Paramount and Warner Bros.
It has been a great success in the country, with 70,000 people subscribing since it was introduced in September.
The company only launched its broadband service recently after buying Be Broadband a year ago.
BT has attracted 100,000 subscribers to it BT Vision Freeview and on demand service which will be in direct competition with O2's new TV service when it is launched.
A recent poll of customer satisfaction in broadband services revealed O2 was the leading supplier. Its service beat AOL, BT and Sky in a poll conducted by thinkbroadband.com.
