Part Time Job And Holiday Job News

Students who take on part time jobs over Christmas are being told to speak up if they do not believe they are working in a safe environment.

Last year there was a 50 per cent increase in deaths of young people in the workplace and it is feared with so many students getting temporary jobs over the festive period the number could rise.

Denise Kitchener, chief executive of the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers (APIL) said: "The highest rate of all workplace injuries occurs in the 16-24 age group, so we are particularly concerned about the one million students who take on part time jobs to fund their studies. With Christmas around the corner, this number is likely to rise and it is imperative that youngsters speak out if they are concerned about a safety issue at work."

She added that more than 17,000 young people have been injured at work over the past year and if people are still being needlessly hurt at work "something is very wrong".

The association is now telling employers to put health and safety on top of their agendas and to make sure people doing temporary work are treated the same as permanent staff.

APIL was established in 1990 and works on behalf of lawyers working on personal injury cases.
