new mobile does shopping
13-Dec-2007

New mobile does shopping A new mobile phone from Nokia has been revealed that can find clothes on the internet after its user has taken a photo of them in a shop window.

The phone is still in development but will no doubt be an attractive prospect for students who want to skip queues in shops.

Image recognition software on the phone identifies the item of clothing from the photo and finds it online.

James Waterworth from the Nokia Research Centre said: "This is one of the concepts we have developed and it's called 'augmented reality'. The concept is to take a picture then send the information to the internet."

Ordering food from a foreign language menu is also about to become a lot easier for users of the mobile. An application on the phone enables people to scan a menu and it is then translated to avoid embarrassment in foreign restaurants.

The prototype of the application can only translate Chinese and Japanese words which describe food and drink, but it is hoped that more languages will be added to it in the future.

Nokia recently announced a new eco-friendly phone concept which is made of 100 per cent recycled steel and plant-based plastics. It also has a strap attached to it which has solar cells on it.
