employment bill to clamp down on rule-breaking employers
10-Dec-2007

Employment Bill to clamp down on rule-breaking employers Students in term-time jobs and holiday work may be pleased to know that the new Employment Bill, published by the government today, proposes harsher penalties on employers that do not pay staff minimum wage.

The bill will also give more power to the Employment Agency Standards Inspectorate to investigate companies and hand out unlimited fines to companies breaking the employment laws and mistreating their staff.

Tom Hadley, director of external relations at the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) said: "We welcome this Bill as it aims to crack down on those employers and agencies that are breaking the rules. REC members abide by our Code of Professional Practice as well as the law. It is not right for them to be undercut by agencies that are cutting corners and mistreating workers."

He added that the recruitment industry should be applauded for putting 1.3 million people into temporary jobs every day and that the REC hopes the new powers for the inspectorate will result in "the rogues being put out of business for good".

The REC represents the recruitment industry and is committed to raising employment standards and helping individuals develop careers in the industry. It recently appointed two new board members – Andrew Horner and Alan Horn.
