graduate freelancers given boost
07-Dec-2007

Graduate freelancers given boost Graduates looking to move into freelance work may be pleased after the EU cancelled plans that would have changed their rights to work.

The plans, which were put forward by the Employment Council, included imposing employment rights on all workers who are not permanent, whether they are employees of a firm or not. This would have greatly affected the freelance working model.

British Chambers of Commerce (BCC), the Institute of Directors (IoD), the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) and the Professional Contractors Group (PCG) all opposed the plans.

Other proposals that were being considered by the EU were the possibility of employment law being decided by the EU instead of countries individually and changing the definition of workers and employees so as to that would mean the term "freelancers" was made completely redundant.

John Brazier, managing director of PCG, said: "We have worked hard on this issue with the FSB, IoD and BCC to warn of the dangers of such a measure; it is good news that Wednesday's meeting confirmed that no new laws will be proposed."

Meanwhile, IT students have been encouraged to learn business skills if they want to get high paying graduate IT jobs.

IT company Micro Focus also said the demand for IT graduates is rising, according to onrec.com.
