Students not being put off gap years Students are not being put off gap years by rising university costs, as many are getting jobs or work experience, according to gapyear.com.

The website, which gives students the chance to organise their gap years online, said that the number of students going on gap years is actually increasing despite tuition fees at university rising.

Tom Griffiths, founder of gapyear.com said: "The gap year industry has changed in the last few years and the fastest growing kinds of gap years are now earning money for university or doing work experience relative to your degree or what you want to do after."

He added that the increase in people doing work in gap years will result in more people travelling as there will be more students earning money and if they "have cash in the bank, the chances are they'll spend a few weeks travelling".

People who take gap years after finishing university to earn money, and who also work during university holidays can avoid being in debt when they graduate according to the website.

A report by Natwest estimated that almost a quarter of students who started university this year had finished their A-levels in 2006 and took a year out of studying before embarking on their university careers this year.
