The EU has released a mobile phone application that will allow students who download it to track their carbon footprints.
The technology, developed by the European Commission's Joint Research Centre, allows users to monitor the impact their choices make on the environment as they go about their days.
Users can then log their weekly and yearly emissions on a diary on their phone and then put their data on a website and compare them with other users of the system, called mobGAS.
Carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide emissions are recorded by the device which can be generated by cooking, transport and lighting among other things.
It is designed so people like students can be aware of their carbon footprints all the time and are able to record information while on buses, waiting for an appointment or any other time they have spare time. mobGAS is available free of charge and in 21 different European languages. It was demonstrated at the UN climate change conference in Bali yesterday.
Meanwhile, wealthier students may be interested to hear that Porsche has created a mobile phone.
The phone is made of aluminium and is the first mobile to be created by Porsche. It will boast a 3.2 megapixel camera and has a built-in mp3 player.
