Students looking for graduate construction jobs may be boosted by the news that there will be a National Skills Academy for Construction on the 2012 Olympic site in London.

The scheme is designed to train local people for jobs in construction and engineering. They will then help redevelop the area as part of the £9 billion project to redevelop the Thames Gateway area.

The number of jobs that are being created by the Gateway project has risen from 180,000 to 225,000.

Prime minister Gordon Brown has announced that the scheme will create 1,000 jobs for local people that are enrolled on constructions courses at local universities and colleges, 1,000 construction jobs for other local people and 500 apprenticeship placements.

Housing minister Yvette Cooper said: "We have already achieved a great deal but we must raise our ambitions and go further and faster. We've now set out plans and money to do so with a new eco-region offering a great quality of life for its inhabitants; with new educational opportunities and transport links as well as affordable homes and with better training to equip the local workforce to benefit from the 225,000 new jobs in their area."

The project will also provide training for students of the future- three university campuses will be built along with 27 new or refurbished schools.
