temp workers could gain more rights
27-Nov-2007

Temp workers could gain more rights Graduates with temporary jobs could receive a boost as it emerges temporary workers could get full employment rights after six weeks of working at a company, reports personneltoday.com.

The Agency Workers Directive, recently put forward again by the Portuguese presidency of the EU, has been argued over since it was introduced in 2002 due to unions wanting temporary workers to get full employment rights straight away and employers wanting the delay to be as long as possible.

The government has been offered the six-week agreement and in return the UK will be able to stay exempt from the EU's Working Time Directive.

The deputy director of employment policy at manufacturers' body the EEF David Yeandle told Personnel Today that he was "very concerned" about the political situation that is surrounding the proposals.

People doing temp work should have to wait for 12 months before receiving full rights according to the EEF, but as the government runs out of options it may need to accept the EU's deal and usher in the changes.

Meanwhile female managers are judged for being insensitive while male managers are not, according to a report.

The research, carried out by Kristin Byron, assistant professor of management at the Whitman School of Management, was conducted by giving students temporary work as managers and studying employees' reaction to them.
