Students asking for mobile phones this Christmas may get what they ask for as global mobile phone sales are going to remain high over the festive period, according to a report.
The study, by research firm Gartner, shows that sales have been high in the past three months and are set to continue the trend over the next three.
Gartner analyst, Carolina Milanesi, said: "I think it's going to be a good Christmas, showing growth of 10 to 15 per cent from last year. Although the third quarter of 2007 was stronger than we anticipated, we are confident that sales in the fourth quarter will continue to be strong."
Nokia enjoyed the best sales figures of the last year. The company increased its share of the global market by 3 per cent to 38.1 per cent.
Meanwhile the Swiss watchmaker, Tag Heuer, has announced it will be releasing a series of luxury mobile phones, the perfect accessory for a rich student.
The firm said the success of its eyewear products prompted it to enter the mobile phone market.
Christophe Babin, chief executive of Tag Heuer, said the company saw its own potential to make "contemporary, technological and timeless products, such as luxury mobile phones".
The mobile phones will be released some time in the second half of next year.
