Increasing numbers of students are exploring graduate careers in gaming, it has emerged.

According to Nick Dettmar, managing director of Computer People, the gaming industry has grown in popularity through being at the "forefront" of the IT industry, reports Onrec.com.

"It's important to emphasise that though competitive, gaming roles are no longer solely available to those with vast industry knowledge," he said.

He explained, saying that just three per cent of people going into the gaming industry this year have had previous experience in the field, which compares with 90 per cent five years ago.

"This gives graduates a chance to take the first step on their career ladder," he continued.

Furthermore, he said, graduates are able to put their technical abilities into practise while also brushing up on various "in-demand skills".

However, he warned that those going into IT should not expect to earn the big bucks that a financial graduate will earn in the City, for example.

The average salary for a "high quality" graduate stands at between £23,000 and £26,000, he said.

Meanwhile, the director of IT Wales, Beti Williams said recently that there is a growing shortfall of graduates going into careers in IT.
